Upcoming Movies

July 16th, 2010 | by Jason
Posted In: A Word From My Mind, Blog Content

I saw these two trailers that I wanted to share with you. They are completely unrelated to each other.

The first is a comedy with Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis.

This one is written by Aaron Sorkin and directed by David Fincher. Aaron Sorkin is the creator/writer of the West Wing and Fincher is the director behind Fight Club and Zodiac.

*sigh*

I miss the West Wing. That was such a great show. I wonder if I can convince my wife to watch for a second time….

Big Thoughts on Smallville

July 14th, 2010 | by Jason
Posted In: A Word From My Mind, Blog Content

I want to talk about Smallville and I can talk about Smallville because this is my blog. So, get ready, ‘cause here’s some thoughts on the longest running TV show about Superman ever.

*****

My wife and I have been working our way through all nine seasons of Smallville since March. We’re currently about 6 episodes away from the end of Season 8. Season 9 wrapped production earlier this year and the show will be starting its 10th season this fall. Tom Welling has logged more hours as Clark Kent then Christopher Reeves, Dean Cain and George Reeves combined (I might be fudging on that, I didn’t really do the math.).

*****

I find it fascentiting over the course of 8 seasons Smallville has gone from being a rural town hours away from Metropolis, to basically being a suburb of Metropolis. A character mentioned, within the show, that it was a two-hour drive been Smallville and Metropolis. I don’t buy it. Lois Lane and Chloe live in Smallville and work in Metropolis. You mean to tell me they take a four hour round trip every day? And that’s if they don’t caught in traffic?

*****

It’s already been announced that the 10th season will be the show’s final one. I ask why, though? Does Smallville really need to be canceled?

Many of you might say yes. Heck, catch me after a particularly bad episode of Smallville I might say yes, too.

And there have quite a few doozies. Much of season 1 and, in particular, a classic 6th season episode that dealt with the issue of immigration about as subtly as a bull in a china shop.

So, yes, Smallville has plenty of faults. Conveniently easy fixes, ill conceived plotlines and a such a powerful desire to maintain the status quo that they’ve actually written that concept into Clark Kent as a character.

What Smallville has done right, though, is establish what no one else has: create a completely different and thoroughly revised version of the Superman mythos.

Marvel did this a few years ago with their Ultimate line of comics. They basically rebuilt the characters and concepts from the ground up. DC Comics has never attempted anything like that. Oh, sure, they killed Superman and made him blue, but these were eventually reversed. No one has ever sat down and said, “Hey, let’s start over from scratch with Superman.”

No, scratch that. John Bryne did it almost thirty years ago.

So, yeah, Smallville is still recognizable as the Superman story, but let’s face it, it may have nods, winks and homage’s to the movies and comics, but it’s a completely different story.

They did make a few missteps.

Clark Kent as the reluctant hero never worked. Especially with everyone around him saying that he’s destined for great things. Clearly he doesn’t want to be bothered with great things. In fact, more so then any other iteration of this character, Smallville’s Clark Kent would have been perfectly content to stay on his family’s farm and let the problems come to him. And, like I said above, I think part of this is from the show’s creators. They seemed so focused on maintaining a certain status quo that Clark said he didn’t want to leave Lana behind it was the show’s creators saying they didn’t want to leave Lana behind.

The Daily Planet. Why is Clark working at the Daily Planet? He has expressed zero interest in the news business. In fact, he hasn’t expressed interest in any kind of work other than working on the farm. There’s an offhand remark about how with him being at the Daily Planet he can be in the thick of things and do the most good(a carryover from the comics). Except, newspapers aren’t the hub of activity and news they used to be. So why is he there?

Clark not flying. Seriously, we’re up to 8 seasons now and the guy can’t figure out how to fly. Meanwhile, every other Kryptonian that comes to Earth and anyone else that gets Clark’s powers figures out how to fly in seconds. It’s gone from being an interesting character quirk to a poor running joke.

But, on the other hand they gave a fantastic version of Lex Luther and a great story about the Luther Dynasty. Michael Rosenbaum and John Glover were excellent as Lex and Lionel Luther. This show could have easily been called the Luthers and been a thousand times more entertaining.

Green Arrow. Whoever likes Green Arrow? Whoever thought that Green Arrow could be Batman in Smallville’s universe? Not me. Great character.

An engaging, if some times uneven, mythology about Krypton. In Smallville’s universe Krypton just doesn’t blow up and go bye-bye. It’s become an unofficial character of the show. Does it take away a little from Clark’s status as the last son of Krypton? Yes, but this show doesn’t need that status.

*****

Since about Season 5 the show experienced a surge in creativity as it embraced it’s more sci-fi elements. Yes, the second half of Season 6 was questionable and the quality was a little spotty in Season 7(I really could have done without Supergirl), overall the show has seen a vast improvement over it’s early seasons.

So, I ask, why cancel it with the 10th season?

I suppose there’s the monetary reasons. It’s not a cheap show to produce, but it performs solidly and it doesn’t look like the CW really has anything to replace it.

“But, Jason, the show’s called Smallville and it hardly takes place in Smallville anymore.” To which I reply: So?

It has been established, repeatedly, that Lois Lane’s nickname for Clark is Smallville. Why can’t the show leave the town of Smallville behind completely and let the name of show refer simply to the man from Smallville. Think about it, you’ll see it works.

Is Tom Welling getting too long in the tooth to play Clark Kent? No. The guy’s only in his 30’s. He’s not playing Clark as a teenager. He’s playing Clark as an adult. Fudge on the age a bit if it makes you feel better.

Of course, if the show continued, Clark would have to put on the costume. But maybe not the costume. With everything else they’ve changed why not come up with a new version of the Superman costume?

But if the CW is dead set on canceling their money train, can I make another suggestion? Spin-off. And, yes, they tried this years ago with Aquaman. But, not to be mean or anything, there was a reason it didn’t make it past the pilot episosde. It was stupid. Now, maybe if you wanted to do a spin off starring Green Arrow(ironically played by the same guy who played Aquaman in the failed pilot), you might be onto something.

Anyway, just some thoughts on Smallville.

300 and Out

300 and Out

Today is the 300th strip of Rupert & Me. It’s also the last daily strip for the foreseeable future.

Turns out there are not enough hours in the day to do all the things I want to. So, something’s got to give.

For now, you can get your monthly dose of Rupert & Me through the Amazon Kindle Store. Volume 1 is out now and I’m hoping to release volume 2 by the end of the month and maintain that monthly schedule.

I have some vague notions about doing a relaunch of the daily Rupert & Me in September, but those are just vague notions and it’s really going to depend on whether or not I can be build up another buffer.

Working on the first Kindle collection absolutely killed my existing buffer and there’s just no way I can I work on the second collection, the daily strip and work my day job.

You might ask, “But, Jason, why bother with the Kindle collections at all then?”

Because I believe comics on the Kindle are an untapped market and I aim to tap it.

The rest of the comics community (Marvel, DC, etc) is just getting on board with digital comics and their efforts are kind of embarrassing. So I figure I’ve got a little bit of time to stake my claim before they get too organized.

Since April of last year I’ve also had a slowly, but steadily growing audience on the Kindle that does not crossover with my website and Rupert & Me audience. Plus, with the change in Amazon’s royalty policies, there’s a real opportunity to make some money there and I am going to seize that opportunity.

The first Rupert & Me collection was fairly simple, considering that I did have to redraw every strip. But I didn’t do anything fancy with the layout. With volume 2 I’m approaching it more like a traditional comic book page and, naturally, it’s turning out to be a little more complicated.

I’m shooting to have each volume between 100-120 pages (do page counts really matter anymore in the digital world anyway?). And I’ll be continuing with the Rupert & Me archived strips before starting on new material. So, depending on how many of the old strips I burn through, you’ll start seeing brand new Rupert & Me content in the Kindle collections around volume 5ish, maybe. I don’t know how exactly it’s going to break down.

Like I said, I have some vague notions for a September relaunch. Best way to insure there is a September relaunch? Tell your friends. Spread the word. Make sure that Rupert & Me Kindle collections are in the top 10 Kindle bestsellers. If I make enough money I don’t need to do the boring day job and, all of a sudden, I have more hours in the day to work on stuff that I like.

The Rupert & Me archive here is not going anywhere, though. All 300 strips will still be available for your reading pleasure. In the next week or so the site’s going to go through a mini redesign. The blog will continue to be updated on the same Tues/Thurs schedule, so continue to check back here for news and updates regarding Rupert & Me, my other books and whatever other random thoughts pop into my head.

Also, I have a notion that the podcast may be returning, but don’t hold me to that just yet.

So, that’s what’s going on. Don’t be sad. Don’t be blue. This is not an ending, but a new beginning.

iWant, But iDon’t Understand

July 1st, 2010 | by Jason
Posted In: A Word From My Mind, Blog Content

I do want the new iPhone 4. In fact, I’m getting the new iPhone 4, eventually. I say eventually because in 3 days it completely sold out. Everywhere.

So, what I don’t understand is why everyone else wants the new iPhone 4.

I’ll admit it, I’m a bit of a tech junkie. I grew up watching Star Trek, and reading comics. Every time a new device comes out I think we’re getting closer and closer to the actual future. I like getting new tech toys. But there can’t be 1.7 million other people who think the same way I do, can there?

There is literally nothing about the new iPhone that warrants people waiting in lines at 7am. And I say this as someone who did get up at 6:45 to be at the AT&T store at 7 so i could be sure I was going to get one. But at 7:05, when I actually got there, there were already 80 people ahead of me. And by 7:20, the AT&T store had sold out of their 40 iPhones.

So, I don’t understand. Is it just that everyone works themselves up into the same tizzy? “I need to get there first thing so I’m guaranteed an iPhone.” But in the end, all 1.7 million people end up thinking the same exact thing and they all show up first thing in the morning?

The first iPhone was different, even the second iPhone was special. The iPad was definitely unique. But we’re onto the fourth generation of the iPhone. There’s nothing in this new iPhone that’s all that special and revolutionary or even different from the iPhone 3Gs.

It has a front facing camera. It has some fancy Retina display. It’s got a sharp looking design. But none of that warrants lines wrapping around entire malls.

In fact, if my wife’s iPhone 3G hadn’t pooped out after downloading the new operating system onto it and she hadn’t needed my iPhone, I dare say that we would be waiting till August to get the new iPhone. But August is a long time to pay for a data plan that I’m not using, you know what I’m saying?

Seriously, though, what has Apple done to us? Have they trained us that well? People don’t line up for new MacBooks or new iPods. Why does everybody get all excited for the iPhone?

Remember, if you leave a review on the Amazon page, I’ll give you a free digital copy of Rupert & Me: Tales From Under the Desk. Drop me a line in the comments or at onestrayword@gmail.com.

Rupert & Me 2.0

June 29th, 2010 | by Jason
Posted In: A Word From My Mind, Blog Content

So, I’d like to think we’re entering Rupert & Me 2.0 or Rupert & Me: Phase Two. My wife and I have been giving some serious thought to the comic and website and we’ve decided to try out some different things. Starting with this:

As of last Thursday Rupert & Me became available in the Amazon Kindle Store. Tales from Under the Desk collects the first 24 or so strips of the series, each completely redrawn. Going from this:

to this:

A few of strips have been rewritten as well. It’s not a complete collection of the first month. Going through those early strips, a few of them made wince. So, it’s actually 24 strips over the first two months. And, personally, I think it’s the best of those first two months.

Tales From Under the Desk is perfectly formatted for the Kindle skin, no zoom required. Plus, if you’ve got an iPad or an iPhone, you get it in full color!

Even if you don’t by the book, feel free to stop by the Amazon page and leave a glowing review.

The plan is to do a book a month. I can’t guarantee that these redrawn strips will make their way to the website, but if you ask real nicely and are a loyal Rupert & Me fan, I’ll send you a PDF copy of Tales From Under the Desk. All you have to do is promise to leave a review on Amazon. That’s a decent trade off, right?

Now, the downside of all this is that I only have four strips completed for July. But, hey, all the popular webcomics are late anyway, so who knows, maybe this’ll be a good thing.
