A Quick Word From The Bible #8: Saving the World?
May 22nd, 2009 |Whether you believe it or not America has always been a Christian country. Granted, we’ve been drifting away from that for the past several years and, ultimately, I think the future of this country will be far removed from Christianity. But, for now, it is the religion of our country.
Recently our country’s richest people gathered together for a secret meeting on the issue of NEED. Oprah, Mayor Bloomberg, Ted Turner, Bill Gates, and Warren Buffett were among the billionaires gathered. They were reportedly trying to figure out much more money they would need to give away to help solve the world’s problems. Because, you know, the 70 Billion Dollars they had already collectively donated to charities over the past several years, just wasn’t enough.
Pardon my snark.
It got me thinking. Actually, it got my wife thinking, who then passed the thought off to me.
Maybe tossing money at our problems isn’t actually a solution.
Gasp.
I didn’t go there, did I?
Oh, yes, I did.
This isn’t an original thought, you know. People come to this realization all the time. Usually it happens in sappy movies about rich people who discover that for all their money, they can’t buy happiness.
Well, it’s the same in the real world. For all their money, have any of these great philanthropists actually changed anything? Are any of the diseases they’ve championed cured? Have they solved world hunger? Are unwanted babies still being tossed into the streets?
70 Billion Dollars. That’s a lot of money. I mean, that’s a lot of money. And at the end of the end day, what have they accomplished with their 70 Billion Dollars worth of donations? Apparently, not very much.
So how much money are they going to give this year? 80 Billion? 100 Billion? What’s the magic number?
Or maybe we need to turn back to the values and beliefs this country was founded on. You know, Christianity, God and all that jazz. I’ll bet you wondering how I was going to tie that first paragraph into all this, weren’t you? Since we haven’t been doing too well with solving our problems on our own, maybe we should turn to Him and ask for His help.
All I’m saying is, we’ve given the rich guys their shot, I think it’s time we gave the Big Guy a shot. If we keep putting our faith in a man or a woman, we’ll constantly be disappointed. Scratch that. We will always be disappointed.
Man is constantly striving to be better because he keeps failing. Why should we expect any individual to be different?
The rich people aren’t going to save us. Obama isn’t going to save us. Bush isn’t going to save us. Oprah isn’t going to save us. The only one that can save us is God. End of story.
Don’t forgot to come back here tomorrow for the premier of Silly Acts.
